The Roll Continues in Thunderous Victory Over Nomads

October 1, 2006. The TSC Thunder Nomads found out the hard way that if you live by the trap, you die by it also, particularly against a team with the speed of the Courage.  Displaying a 4-6 defender line up, the Nomads swore off any effort to score and repeatedly utilized a tricky off-sides trap to stymie the Courage attack. Controlling the play for the whole of the comtest, the Courage finally broke the code late in the second half on Meredith Doherty’s perfectly timed run through the Nomads defense.  Perfectly receiving the ball, Doherty slipped it by the goalie for the only score necessary in the contest.  The victory was the third straight for the Courage who stand undefeated and in first place in the division.

Hard Fought Victory Shows Depth of McLean Soccer

September 24, 2006. It’s never fun to have to play your sister team in McLean, but that’s the situation the Courage found itself in as it took the field against the McLean Grasshoppers. Friends and neighbors lined the sidelines during the fun, tense, friendly, anxious affair.  It began with the Grasshoppers displaying a solid passing game that kept the Courage defense on its toes.  The Courage responded with several shots, but no talleys.  Finally, Alley Adcock burst through the Grasshopper defense and beat the keeper for a 1-0 Courage lead right before halftime.

The second half saw the Courage take control.  The Courage defense locked down on the Grasshoppers’ passing lanes, keeping the ball plugged in to the Grasshoppers end of the field.  Christine Popps nailed a PK after Stephanie Burns was fouled in the box for a final 2-0 score. Congratulations to the Grasshoppers on a hard fought contest. Good luck with the rest of your season!  We are rooting for you!

Courage Squashes Toads For First Victory.

September 17, 2006.  After opening the season with two disappointing ties, the Courage gained their first victory of the fall season with a 3-2 victory over the Freestate Lemon Toads.  The Lemon Toads took an early 1-0 lead as the Toad forward banged home a nice cross. The game soon settled down.  Christina Popps knocked in a PK to tie it up at 1. The Toads’ attack was kept at bay by a staunch Courage defense led by Jordan Walker’s marking of the Toad’s dangerous forward. Kacey Kelley and Campbell Millar each sliced through the Toad defense to make it 3-1.  The Toads added a late goal for a 3-2 final score.

Team Philosophy

What is the McLean Courage soccer team all about? According to their coach, three goals - increasing player athletic character, preparing for advanced play, and making lifetime friendships - are key to the McLean Team Philospohy. Below is the team philospohy from Coach Ged Wood:

Coaching Philosophy
My emphasis is on education. My primary interest is that players learn all techniques and skills, while developing a sound understanding of the tactical side of the game in a fun and motivating environment.

Off the Pitch

Girls on the Courage are not just teammates, they are also friends. This not only helps them play effectively but, more importantly, makes their participation on the team more enriching and fun. Off-the-pitch activities are especially important for teams like the Courage, which draw girls from throughout the Washington area.

Courage off-the-pitch activities have included swim parties; overnight sleepover parties; campfire parties; bowling outings; a trip to Kings Dominion (in a chartered bus with movies!).  In

In the summer of 2004, the Courage spent five days in Pennsylvania riding roller coasters at Hershey Park, rafting and tubing down the Delaware River, ice skating, swimming and playing in the Poconos Cup tournament in Stroudsburg. A great time was had by all!

Courage parents also socialize together on a regular basis at parent-only, as well as team-wide events.
